The Painters and Allied Trades Union has had over forty instructors across Canada and United States trained to deliver the Mentorship Matters course. This class is a vital tool that provides support and guidance to IUPAT apprentices, by transferring the skill and knowledge from journeyperson to apprentice. Mentorship will increase the apprentice’s ability to succeed in the trade and strengthen retention rates for our union.

The Mentorship Matters Program has been a tremendous success and continues to be within our organization. The structured approach to mentorship that has developed has made passing knowledge along from not only journeyman to apprentice, but also from managers to worker as we have applied the program to our office staff as well. Thanks to program, not only do our managers and supervisors now have the tools to teach and communicate with workers effectively, our workers our now have clearer understandings of how to preform their tasks, what is expected and how to take advantage of their career opportunities. Any organization looking to fix poor communication, boost morale, see gains in quality, safety and productivity should definitely consider this truly remarkable program.
Journeyworker of 5 years
It was clearly presented in an engaging format. The presentation wasn’t dry and it didn’t feel like I was being overloaded. I found it a very valuable use of my Saturday afternoon and I look forward to using my new skills in the workplace.
Second Year Apprentice
It was great to get taught about these skills from honest people/teachers from the trade. The real stories and experiences made the workshop interesting.
